IMAM HUSSAINS SPEECH THE BATTLE OF KARBALA

"O people of Iraq! Listen to me and do not hasten to kill me until I inform you of my position, and then judge what the reason for my arrival is. If you accept my apology, you must believe in what I say, and you must be justly accommodating to me. You must smooth out the procedure yourselves so that you have no reason to kill me. And even if you do not wish to accept my apology and still choose to deviate from the path of justice, then you must consider the advantages and disadvantages of my murder before you kill me. You should not undertake such a fragile task carelessly and without deliberation. My supporter is Almighty Allah, who has revealed the Quran. Allah protects His deserving worshippers."

When the Imam's speech reached this stage, he heard wailing and lamentation from his sisters and daughters who were listening to him. Then he said to his brother Abbas and his son Ali: "Go and silence these women, for they will have to weep a lot from now on." When the voices of the ladies of the Holy Family were no longer heard, the Imam praised Allah and invoked blessings upon the angels and prophets. He spoke in more eloquent and expressive words than any orator who had existed before him or would come after him, and said to the people of Kufa:

"O people! Identify me and see who I am. Then you will come to your senses and you will blame yourselves. You should carefully consider whether it is permissible for you to kill me and disregard my reverence.

Am I not the son of the daughter of your Prophet? Is not my father the cousin of the Prophet and the first deputy? Am I not the son of the one who supported the Messenger of God and expressed faith in Allah and confirmed what His Prophet brought? Am I not the grandson of the one whose uncle was not Hamza son of Abdul Muttalib? Is not the martyr Jafar son of Abu Talib, who has two wings and flies with the angels of Allah, my uncle? Have you not heard the Holy Prophet say about me and my brother: "My two sons are the chiefs of the young men of Paradise."
I swear by Allah that I know that Allah hates liars and I have never lied. And even if you do not believe my words and refute me, there are still some companions of the Holy Prophet among you who will confirm my statements if they are asked about the truth. Ask Jabir son of Abdullah Al-Ansari, or Abu Saeed Al-Khudari, or Nahl son of Sadi, or Zayd son of Arqam, or Anas son of Malik. They will tell you that they heard these words from the Holy Prophet about me and my brother. Are not these narrations and reports in themselves sufficient to deter you from killing me?
If you doubt this tradition, will you also doubt that I am the son of your Prophet's daughter? I swear by Allah that there is no one in the East or the West who is the son of the Prophet's daughter but me, neither among you nor among others.
Ask yourselves, have I killed any of you so that you may take revenge! Or have I acquired wealth at your expense and rights, that you now claim it? Or have I injured you so that you raise claims for compensation?"

None of them came forward to answer the questions the Imam asked them.

LADY ZAINABS SPEECH IN DAMASCUS

When the women of the Prophet's household reached the outskirts of Damascus, they were forced to halt. Yazid was informed of their arrival, and he set a day for their march into the city. On the morning of the appointed day, the Prophet's family was taken to Damascus. They were bound with ropes and herded together like cattle. If any stumbled, they were whipped. The streets had been decorated and the sound of music filled the city. People crowded together, wearing festive clothes, and cheered as they saw the procession, in which, as usual, the heads of the martyrs were carried in front. With dignity and self-respect, the prisoners paraded through Damascus. Zainab even threw aside the food that some had offered them out of pity.

The son of one of the enemies of the Prophet (sa) who had waged war against Imam Ali (as) was among the crowd. When he saw Imam Al-Sajjad (as), he asked him in a harsh manner who was the victor now. The Imam replied to him:

"If you want to know who the victor is, then (be alert) when it is time for prayer and the Adhan and Iqama are recited."

In this way, the prisoners were paraded until the afternoon, when they reached Yazid's palace. There he sat on his throne and was greatly pleased when he saw the forty-four bound prisoners arrive. The head of Imam Hussein (a.s.) was brought to him on a golden platter. He struck the Imam's lips with his stick and said:

"O Hussein! You have paid the price for your rebellion."

When Zainab (as) and her companions saw this display of arrogance, they burst into tears, after which many of those present were ashamed of his action. But Yazid remained gloating and said:

"My ancestors who were killed in Badr have been avenged today. Now it has become clear that Bani Hashim had only staged a play to gain power and that there were no Divine revelations."

However, Zainab (as) was not afraid. She stood up and said bravely:

"Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and blessings be upon my grandfather, the Leader of the Divine Messengers. O Yazid, Allah says, and His word is the truth, that: 'Evil was the end of those who did evil, because they rejected the signs of Allah and took them in mockery.' [1]

O Yazid, do you think that you have succeeded in blocking the heavens and the earth from us, and that we have become your prisoners because we have been brought to you in ranks and you have secured control over us? Do you think that we have been insulted and dishonored by Allah and that you have been given honor and respect by Him? You have become boastful of this apparent victory, that you have become confident and have begun to triumph and feel proud of this prestige and honor.

You think that you have attained worldly goods, that your affairs have been stabilized, and that our dominion has fallen into your hands. Wait a moment. Do not be so cheerful. Have you forgotten the saying of Allah: 'And let not the disbelievers think that We grant them respite, that it is for their good. We grant them respite only that they may increase in sin, and a humiliating punishment will be theirs.' [2]

O son of the freed slaves, is it then your justice that you keep your own daughters and your maidservants veiled, while the daughters of the Prophet of Allah are paraded and exhibited from place to place. You have disgraced us by uncovering our faces. Your men took us from city to city where the people of all the world, whether they were settled on hills or on riverbanks, looked at us. The near as well as the far, the poor as well as the rich, the lowly as well as the distinguished – all cast their eyes upon us, while our position is such that none of our relatives could help or support us.

O Yazid, whatever you do proves your rebellion against Allah and your denial of His Prophet (sa) and the Book and Sunnah which the Holy Prophet (sa) brought from Allah. Your deeds will not cause astonishment, because one whose grandmother chewed on the liver of the martyr, whose flesh was made by malignant people, who fought against the Leader of all the Messengers of God, who mobilized the parties to fight against him and drew their swords against him, would clearly surpass all the Arabs in disbelief, sinfulness, transgression, and enmity towards Allah and His Prophet.

Remember that the evil deeds and sinful actions that you have committed are the result of the lack of faith and the old hatred you bear because of your ancestors who were killed at Badr.

One who casts his hostile glance, malice and hatred upon us does not hesitate to practice enmity upon us. He proves his lack of faith, declares it with his tongue and triumphantly proclaims: 'I have killed the sons of the Prophet of Allah and made his descendants prisoners' and wishes that his forefathers had lived to see his exploits and to have exclaimed: 'O Yazid, may your arms not lose their strength'.

[1] The Holy Koran: 30, 10
[2] The Holy Koran: 3, 178

O Yazid, you strike the lips of Imam Hussein with your stick in front of this crowd, while these lips were used to being kissed by the Prophet of Allah, and again your face reflects pleasure and joy.

By my life, by killing the lord and the youth of Paradise, the son of the leader of the Arabs (Ali) and the shining sun of the offspring of Abdul Muttalib, you have deepened our sorrow and detached us completely.

By killing Hussein ibn Ali (as), you have earned proximity to the rank of your infidel ancestors. You proclaimed your deeds with arrogance and if they could see you, they would applaud your action and pray that your arms will not be paralyzed.

O Yazid! If you had the heart to consider your deeds, you yourself would certainly wish that your arms were paralyzed and cut off from your elbows, and you would wish that your parents had not given birth to you, because you would know that Allah has become displeased with you.

Allah, grant us our rights. Avenge those who oppressed us.

O Yazid! You did what you wished, but remember that you have cut your own skin and flesh into pieces. Soon you will be brought into the presence of the Prophet. You will be burdened with the weight of your sins, committed by shedding the blood of his offspring and by dishonoring his family. The place to which you will be brought will be in front of all the members of his family. The oppressed will be avenged and the enemies will be punished.

Yazid! It does not seem that you will swell with joy after the killing of the Prophet's offspring. 'Do not think that those who are killed in the cause of Allah are dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, (and) provided for (in every way), rejoicing in what Allah has given them of His grace.' [3]

Allah is sufficient for you. The Messenger of Allah is your opponent and Gabriel is our support and help against you.

Those who have made you the leader and burned the Muslims with your leadership will soon find out what awaits them. The end of all tyrants is severe pain.

O Yazid! I speak to you only to warn you of the severe chastisement that is prepared for you, so that you may be filled with regret, for you are one of those whose hearts are hardened, whose souls are rebellious, and whose bodies are occupied with disobedience to Allah, while they are cursed by the Messenger of Allah. You are one of those whose hearts are made a dwelling place for Satan, and in which he has begotten offspring.

How astonishing that the virtuous people, the sons of the Prophets and the Vicegerents, are at the hands of the freed slaves, evildoers and sinners. Our blood is shed by their hands and our flesh is served as food for them. We feel sorrow for those whose bodies lie shrouded and unburied on the battlefield, wounded with arrows.

O Yazid, if you consider our defeat as your achievement, then you must pay its price. Allah does not do injustice to His servants. We place our trust in Allah. He alone is our Help and our Refuge, and on Him alone we will rest our hope.

You may plan and try as much as you can. By Him Who honored us with the revelation, the Book and the Prophethood, you will not be able to attain our status, nor reach our position, nor can you affect our mention, nor remove from yourself the shame and dishonor that is your fate because you wronged, wronged and oppressed us. Your words are weak and your days are numbered. Beware of the Day when the Herald will proclaim the curse of Allah upon the oppressors and the unjust.

Praise be to Allah, Who gave a good end to His friends and granted them success in their intentions, and then called them to His Grace, Pleasure and Bliss, while you threw yourself into evil and mischief by committing injustice against them.

We ask Allah to favor us with full reward through them, and to grant us the good Khilafah and Imamat. Indeed, Allah is Beneficent and Most Merciful to His creatures."

[3] The Holy Koran: 3, 169-170

Among the gathering was a red-haired Syrian who saw Fatima Alkubra, daughter of Imam Hussein (as), and asked Yazid to give her to him. When the girl heard this, she clung to Zainab (as) and began to cry. She feared that after the loss of her father, she would now become a slave girl. Zainab (as), on the other hand, was not afraid. She turned to Yazid and told him that he had neither the right nor the authority to give the young girl like that, whereupon he stood up to show that he could. Zainab (as) retorted:

"You mistreat me because of your authority and power."

Upon hearing this, Yazid was ashamed to remain silent.

To the Syrian she said:

"May the curses of Allah be upon you. May Hell be your eternal destiny. May your eyes become blind and your limbs paralyzed."

Instantly the man was paralyzed and fell dead.

IMAM SAJJADS SPEECH CONFRONTING YAZID IN DAMASCUS

During his speech, Imam Sajjad specified the status of the Prophet's household in Islam, saying:

"O people! Allah has given us six qualities, and our superiority over others is based on seven pillars.
The six things that He has given us are: knowledge, forbearance, generosity and mercy, eloquence, bravery and heartfelt love for the believers. People cannot be forced to become our friends but devotees and followers.
Allah has willingly seen to it that the faithful people should love us, and that it is not possible to prevent them from this in any way and to do anything as a result of which people can love others and hate us.

Our superiority over others is also based on these seven pillars of Islam in the form of the personalities; - Muhammad, the Messenger and Prophet of God

- and his successor, Ali son of Abi Talib,
- and the Dean of Martyrs Hamza,
- Jaafar Al-Tayyar
- Hassan and Hussain, the two grandsons of the Holy Prophet of this nation,
- and the Mahdi, the savior of the oppressed and deprived people of the world, and the savior of this nation and the Imam of the last age.
All these personalities are from our holy family."
"O people! Whoever knows me, knows me, and whoever does not know me, I will tell him about my ancestors and my lineage. I am the son of Mecca and Mina. I am the son of Zamzam and Safa. I am the son of the one who carried the Black Stone with his cloak. I am the son of the best man who wore loincloths and clothes. I am the son of the best man who walked in sandals and (who walked) barefoot. I am the son of the best man who performed Tawaf and Sa'y (pilgrim's rituals). I am the son of the best man who performed the pilgrimage and answered (Allah's) call. I am the son of the one who rode al-Buraq and ascended to Heaven. I am the son of the one who traveled from the Forbidden Mosque - in Mecca - to Al-Aqsa - in Jerusalem. I am the son of the one with whom Gabriel reached the end of the horizon. I am the son of the one who was two bow lengths away. away - from Allah - or less. I am the son of the one upon whom the angels of heaven sent blessings. I am the son of the one to whom the Majestic sent His revelations.

I am the son of the chosen Muhammad. I am the son of Ali, the acknowledged. I am the son of the one who fought the people until they said: "There is no god but Allah." I am the son of the one who fought with the Prophet with two swords, stabbed with two spears, emigrated on two expeditions, made two pledges, fought at Badr and Hunayn and did not disbelieve for a single moment. I am the son of the one who is protected by Gabriel and supported by Michael.
I am the son of the one who protects the women of the Muslims, kills the traitors, the disloyal and the apostates, and fights his enemies, those who abhor the Ahlulbayt. And (I am the son of) the first of the believers who responded and responded to Allah and His Messenger; the first of the first; the exterminator of polytheism; an arrow from the shooting places of Allah against the hypocrites; the tongue of wisdom of the worshippers; the supporter of the religion of Allah; the protector of the cause of Allah and the keeper of the knowledge of Allah.
He was generous and generous, noble, contented and courageous. The one who put an end to the evil lineages. He separated the parties, the most resolute of them, and the most noble, the most sure in determination, the most daring with the tongue. He was a brave lion who ground them in the battles, when the swords and spears and arrows mixed together, like flour is ground in stone. The lion of Hijaz and the ram of Iraq. From Mecca, from Medina, from Badr, from Uhud, from Shajar, the emigrant. The Lord of the Arabs and the lion of battles. The heir of the sanctuaries.
The father of (the Prophet's) two grandsons, Hassan and Hussein. This is my grandfather, Ali son of Abi Talib. I am the son of Fatima al-Zahraa. I am the son of the lady of all women. I am the son of the pure (and) chaste. I am the son of (she who is) a part of the Prophet. I am the son of the one covered with blood. I am the son of the owner of this head, the sacrifice of Karbala."

The Imam said these words while pointing to the severed head of Imam Hussein.

Imam Sajjad (son of Imam Hussain) wanted to say with these words that Yazid first wanted to deprive the Ahlul Bayt of this high position and tried to transfer it to himself and then undermine the Imam and the Holy Household of the Prophet.

The Imam introduced himself, and matters took such a turn that Yazid and his followers were obliged to disrupt his speech.

They asked the caller to prayer to recite the Adhan and the call to prayer.

The Imam, of course, also had to remain silent, but at the same time he took advantage of another opportunity.

When the caller to prayer said: "I bear witness that Muhammad is the prophet of Allah," he took off his turban and said: "O caller to prayer! I ask you in the name of Muhammad to be silent."

FRU ZAINABS TALE I KUFA

Folket af Kufa, ve over jer.
